Frequently asked questions

Vertical or horizontal machining center: which one?

A vertical is easier to set up and cheaper: right for moulds, one-offs and mixed batches. A horizontal evacuates chips better and, with a pallet changer, runs in pendulum mode, so it pays off on repetitive lots and multi-face work. For serial housings, valves or pump bodies the horizontal earns its keep; otherwise the vertical remains the flexible choice.

Are declared working hours reliable? What do they really tell?

On-board counters usually distinguish power-on hours from hours in cycle: the second figure matters more. But hours alone are not enough: a 5-axis with 20,000 hours of aluminium can be in better shape than a 3-axis with 8,000 hours of heavy steel. Where possible our listings also state what kind of work the machine was doing.

Is the 4th axis or rotary table included?

When the machine carries a 4th axis, indexer or rotary table, it is listed among the accessories. If it is not mentioned, ask: owners sometimes have uninstalled accessories that can be included in the deal.

What should I check on a used machining center?

Axis backlash, spindle taper condition (fretting or crash marks), a full tool-change cycle and geometry: a test pass with a dial indicator quickly shows whether the machine has taken hits. Bring one of your own parts to the inspection and machine it.

I cannot find the machining center I need: can you alert me?
